Description
Role Overview A dual-hat role that bridges tactical communications engineering and robotics doctrine. The ideal candidate is a former officer with signals, electronic warfare, or communications specialization who also has genuine technical depth. This person owns the Tier 3 scope jointly with the communications partner: software-defined radio, mesh networking, satellite communications, command and control integration, and critically, the remote-control failsafe system (both wireless and fiber-optic). Simultaneously, this person drives robotics doctrine requirements into the communications architecture, answering: what does denied-spectrum operations actually mean for an autonomous combat robot?
Responsibilities
Own Tier 3 technical direction jointly with the communications partner: software-defined radio integration, mesh networking, satellite link, command and control framework
Design the remote-control failsafe system: wireless direct control for training and testing, fibre-optic tethered control for combat recovery when the autonomy tier is shut down
Drive robotics doctrine requirements into the communications architecture: what happens when radio is jammed, when satellite is lost, when the operator link degrades?
Define the denied-spectrum operations concept: graceful degradation of autonomy and communications under electronic warfare conditions
Co-design the authority sharing state machine (human-in-the-loop, human-on-the-loop, self-defense modes) with operational credibility
Own the Tier 3 bring-up: first mesh link, first remote-control loop, first operator data display
Define multi-vehicle operations concept: how one operator controls 2 to 5 vehicles simultaneously without cognitive overload
Interface with the communications partner for Statement of Work execution and technical acceptance
Competencies
Military background with signals, electronic warfare, or communications expertise. Officer level preferred.
Technical depth in tactical communications: software-defined radio, mesh networking, satellite communications concepts. Not just user-level, understands link budgets, waveforms, and interference.
Interest in or experience with robotics, unmanned systems, or autonomous operations.
Doctrine development capability: ability to translate operational needs into technical requirements and vice versa.
Understanding of command-and-control frameworks and standards used in allied ground operations.
Fluent French and professional English.
Comfort working in a small technical team where military rank is replaced by engineering contribution.
